What Coastyear is

Coastyear is a free calculator for people who are 10 to 30 years from retirement and want to know when they can stop saving or cut back to part-time work. It puts Social Security and pensions, a partner, part-time years, and saving a little while you coast into one calculation.

It does two jobs. The Coast FIRE calculator finds the age you can stop saving. The Barista FIRE calculator works out what you need before switching to part-time work. Both use the same engine.

It's built for the middle stretch of retirement planning. It doesn't try to replace detailed tax planning or a financial planner. The methodology page explains exactly what it does and doesn't model.

Who makes it

SuperLede

SuperLede is the pen name of the person who builds and maintains Coastyear. Rather than ask you to trust a name, the methodology page writes out every formula, default assumption and data source the calculators use, so you can check the numbers yourself.

How it's paid for

The calculators are free and have no ads. Some links to other financial products are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you sign up. Each one is labeled right next to the link, and none of them changes how the calculator works or what it shows you. Our disclosures list every way Coastyear makes money.

Your numbers stay with you

The calculator runs in your browser. The ages, balances and amounts you enter are never sent to our servers, and saved plans stay in your browser. If you sign up for reminder emails, we store your email address and the choices you made, nothing more. The privacy policy has the details.

Contact and corrections

If you find a number that looks wrong, a formula that doesn't match the methodology, or anything else that should be fixed, email support@coastyear.com. Corrections to the method are listed in the methodology's change log.
