Privacy policy

The short version
The numbers you put into Coastyear stay in your browser. We never receive your ages, balances, spending, income or any other plan figure. If you sign up for reminder emails, we keep your email address, the emails you chose and a record of your consent, and we delete them when you ask.
Coastyear is run by CoastYear, Portland, Oregon, USA. Questions about this policy go to support@coastyear.com.
What stays in your browser
- Calculations. Every result, chart and history check is worked out in your browser.
- Saved plans. When you save a plan, it's stored in your browser's local storage on your device. You can export it as a file or delete it at any time.
- Share links. The numbers in a share link come after the # sign. Browsers don't send that part of an address to any server, so it doesn't appear in our logs or in the referrer sent to other sites. Anyone you send the link to can see the numbers.
- Share images. The picture you can download is drawn in your browser.
What we collect
If you sign up for emails
- Your email address.
- Which emails you chose: a yearly reminder to rerun your numbers, a quarterly check-in, or both. The confirmation email is always sent.
- Your consent: what you ticked, which version of the sign-up wording you saw, and when. We also record when you confirmed and, if you do, when you unsubscribed.
- The country preset you were using and the page you signed up on.
- A schedule of reminders due to you: the due date, which email, whether it was sent, and the message ID from our email provider.
Our emails never contain a link to your plan or any of its numbers. Reminders ask you to open the link you saved or import your file.
When you use the site
- Analytics. We use Vercel Web Analytics, which doesn't use cookies. It records the page you visited, without anything after the # or ? sign, and a few named events: finishing a calculation, clicking share, submitting your email, and clicking an affiliate link, along with which partner it was. Events never include amounts or ages.
- A session marker. To count a finished calculation once per browser tab, we set a small marker in your browser's session storage. It's not a cookie and it's cleared when you close the tab.
- Country check. To decide whether to show a US-only partner link, and whether to suggest your country's preset, your browser asks our server for your country. The answer is worked out from the country our hosting provider attaches to the request. We don't store it.
- Server logs. Our servers record the status code and response time of each request. They don't record what you sent.
- Sign-up limits. To stop abuse, we count sign-up attempts per IP address and per email address. The counts are stored under a one-way code made from the address, not the address itself, and deleted after two days.
What we never collect
- Any number from your plan: ages, balances, savings, spending, income, returns or results.
- Accounts or passwords. There's nothing to sign in to.
- Advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. We don't run ads.
- Error reports from your browser. We don't use an error-monitoring service.
We don't sell or share your personal information, and we don't use it for anything other than sending the emails you asked for.
Who helps us run the site
- Vercel hosts the site, provides the analytics described above, and supplies the country used for the partner link.
- Resend sends our emails, so it handles your email address and the content of each email.
- Our subscriber records are kept in a Supabase database on a server we run ourselves.
If you click an affiliate link and sign up with that company, its own privacy policy applies to what you give it. We don't pass any of your plan numbers to partners.
Unsubscribing and deleting your data
- Every email has links to stop that kind of email or all of them. Unsubscribing takes effect straight away, though an email that was already being sent when you clicked may still arrive.
- To have your data deleted, email support@coastyear.com from the address you signed up with. Within 30 days we delete your email address, consent records and reminder schedule.
- Saved plans live only in your browser. Delete them in the calculator, or clear this site's data in your browser settings.
Your rights
We send emails only with your consent, which you give by ticking the boxes and confirming your address. You can withdraw it at any time by unsubscribing.
If you're in the UK or the European Union, you can ask to see the personal data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or take a copy with you, and you can complain to your data protection authority, which in the UK is the Information Commissioner's Office. Wherever you live, we'll honor the same requests.
Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
